Christmas Social
Date: Saturday, 4th December 2010
Location: Riverside Park, Durham
The Christmas Social will take place at the Riverside Park, Durham County C C
Created in the 1930s, Riverside Park in Chester-le-Street has always been popular with residents, as well as attracting visitors from across the region.
During the 1990s it was redeveloped and today includes artist-designed ornamental gardens, an events arena, play area and paddling pool, in addition to a park centre with cafe and toilets.
In 1996, two artists - Roger Dickinson and Isabella Lockett - together with writer Linda France, were commissioned to create works to be incorporated into the Riverside Gardens. The artists drew their inspiration from local landscape designers William Andrews Nesfield (1794 - 1881) and Thomas Wright (1711 - 1786) who both had a keen interest in the solar system - today each of the finished gardens reflects a different star or planet.
The gardens provide a place of quiet contemplation and reflection. The grassed area and riverside walks provide opportunities for quiet relaxation, picnics, kite flying or more vigorous pursuits such as running and cycling.
