Setting up our Plant in Welshpool

Presentation by Peter Radcliffe, MD of Contech Ltd

During his presentation, Peter explained why and how the Company chose Welshpool to set up a new state of the art Die Casting Foundry. They manufacture components for the automotive industry. The company recruited the workforce from the local community and have at present 80 employees working three shifts.

The site mirrors the American site, as this was a proven footprint for production in a Die Casting Foundry. The site has good road links and has excellent environmental amenities and blends in with the surroundings.

April 2001 saw the start of production with 80 new workers being trained by a small number of American trained staff. The foundry has a same day lead-time and despatches the same day, this enables them to keep the stock of finished components to a bare minimum.

Peter explained that the employees are responsible for the housekeeping of the factory and that they have been successful in maintaining the workforce that they set up with in 2001. They have plans to double the production in the next two years.

Sandy Nelson gave the vote of thanks and the Scottish Branch sponsored the buffet.
