UK company hosts civic dignitary in special year
UK foundry, Gabriel & Co Ltd recently hosted a visit of the Mayor of Birmingham, UK, Councillor Michael Wilkes who toured the foundry and met many of the staff including Chairman Anthony Gabriel, Managing Director John Gabriel, General Manager Jason Smith and Sales Manager Jon Price.
The company is celebrating 125 years of casting in 2009 and commemorated this occasion with a specially commissioned cast bench exhibited in Centenary Square Birmingham, UK, prepared as part of the ‘Made In Birmingham Exhibition’.
The company began in 1884, when Percy Gabriel purchased a small brass foundry business in A.B. Row, Birmingham for the sum of £235 and began trading as Gabriel and Co. with 13 employees. Nowadays, whilst still very much a family firm, the company operates from a new purpose built facility, opened in 1996, and specialises in alloy steel castings for the petrochemical and water purification industries as well as a range of street furniture and handrail systems.
Commenting on the mayoral visit, John Gabriel said, “we were very pleased that the mayor wanted to visit our company in this special year, and that we could help to raise awareness about our industry and issues that manufacturing faces”.
