Steam Engines & Engineering
The first lecture of the Lancashire Branch was held on Monday 5th October, at PMT Industries, Bolton when Mr Humphrey Davies, of Cerdic Foundry gave a nostalgic presentation relating to his boy-hood dream of being a steam engine driver, and how it turned into reality.
Humphrey's humorous talk covered the basics of preparing a steam engine for duty, which included the all important fire presentation and lighting, as well as cooking of breakfast on the fireman's shovel.
The second part of the talk related to the purchase of an ex-British Rail locomotive, which had lay in a scrap yard for approximately 30 years, and the mammoth task to rebuild it to main line working condition.
The evening's event was concluded with a short video presentation which showed Humphrey and colleagues driving main line steam locomotives in Poland.
Due to illness the Branch President, Graham Hall did not attend the meeting, and Ricky Cairns who deputised for the evening as chairperson, thanked Humphrey for his talk, as well as all in attendance for their continued support.
