High Level Sand Reclamation
At an extremely well attended London Branch meeting on 11th November 2009 at the National Liberal Club, Whitehall Place, London, Mr. Mark Fenyes of the Omega Foundry Machinery Group gave a presentation on the subject of High Level Sand Reclamation using the USR Secondary Attrition Unit.
Mark opened by reminding all present of the ever pressing need for foundries to take on board the negative environmental and cost implications of not reducing the amount of sand being sent for landfill. With the impending increase in UK landfill tax up to £40 per tonne and proposed year on year increases in the order of £8 per tonne per annum, improving the percentage of sand being reclaimed at low impact to the environment, and to the bank balance of course, has to be high on the priority list of any sand foundry currently with high waste levels of sand, in particular those foundries with chemically bonded sand systems.
Mark described in detail an ongoing case study where a USR secondary attrition unit has been installed in a jobbing foundry producing aluminium, iron and steel castings up to 500kgs individual weight , the results so far have been extremely encouraging showing improved reclamation rates from the previous average of 60% to an average 90% with no detriment to casting quality. Mark advised that with this level of improvement a saving of some £120k per annum was forecast for this size of foundry. Detailed overhead graphics giving the audience a clear understanding of the secondary attrition process accompanied Marks extremely informative and entertaining presentation.
Following a lively questions and answers session, those present were able to take advantage of the opportunity for an informal discussion with other attendees over a buffet kindly sponsored by Omega Foundry Machinery Group.
