John Surrey September 1952 - March 2011
It is with sad regret that we record the death of John Surrey in March 2011 after a short illness.
John started his working life in 1969 in the Foundry Laboratory of Clarke Chapman & Co in Gateshead. He then moved on to The Davy Roll Company in Gateshead, manufacturers of very large Roll Castings for the Steel Rolling industry, where he eventually moved from the laboratory to become the Heat Treatment Supervisor.
In 1980 he joined Wilsons Steel Foundry in Bishop Auckland as Technical Manager where he remained for 6 years. His career then changed direction slightly, when in 1986, he was appointed Technical Manager at Charles W. Taylor & Son Ltd, a foundry which produced very large Iron Castings for the Power Generation Sector. John remained with them until they closed in 2003 after which he joined Paralloy Foundry in Billingham Cleveland where he remained until his untimely death.
John was an active member of the Newcastle Branch and was secretary for a number of years prior to the amalgamation with the Teesside Branch to form the North East Branch in 2004. He remained a member of the newly formed Branch.
John in his younger days was a very keen sportsman and played football and cricket for various clubs around the Newcastle and Gateshead area to a relatively high amateur standard. In his late 20’s he decided to take up Golf and as with the other ball sports he found that he could play to a very good standard.
After retiring from football and cricket he bought a season ticket for his beloved Newcastle United and supported them enthusiastically home and away.
John leaves a wife Barbara to whom we extend our sincere condolences from all at the I.C.M.E.
