Sad death of Don Forster Hon Fellow
Don joined the Institute in 1950 as a 24 year old. Until its closure in 1967, Don served a full apprenticeship at Darlington Forge, which included Pattern Making and working in the Metallurgy and Refractory laboratories and was promoted to Assistant Manager in 1954.
He did his 2 years National Service in the Royal Naval. He then relocated to Sheffield where he worked for Grimesthorpe Foundry in a managerial position.
Don was Secretary of the Tees-side and Sheffield branches. Whilst Secretary of the Tees-side branch he was instrumental in the organisation of the Apprentice Competition, which ran from 1953-1983.
He was a winner of the Meritorious Medal and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute.
Don took early retirement in 1982 and pursued is love love of gardening and foreign travel and was an enthusiastic member of his local Masonic Lodge. He died on 14th April 2012 and leaves behind a wife, Nan and three children Judith, Avril and Roderick. Do will be sadly missed.
