Peter Nix elected as ICME National President
The new ICME National President is Mr Peter Nix (shown second from right in the photograph), who was elected at ICME's AGM on the 12th May 2007. Peter has successfully steered The Mottram Group to its strong position as a supplier of a range of metals and alloys to the Foundry Industry. Peter is keen to see membership of ICME thrive during his year of office and to carry on the excellent work of modernising the Institute commenced by Bob Brown (Foseco), during his year of office, and continued so effectively by immediate Past President Barrie Williams, shown second from left wearing the Chain of Office.
Senior Vice President: Mr Willie Howson IEng FICME, George Taylor & Co (Hamilton) Ltd, (far right). Willie has been at George Taylor & Co (Hamilton) Ltd for over 18 years and the Foundry Manager there for 12 years. The foundry is a ferrous jobbing foundry producing castings ranging in weight from 0.5kg to 3t to a wide range of industrial sectors. Willie's role involved production, metallurgy, patternmaking and personnel. Willie has been a member of the Institute for more than 17 years and has been a Branch President and Branch Secretary of the Scottish Branch of ICME. He is an FICME and an IEng and a member of General Council since 1997.
Junior Vice President: Dr William Griffiths CEng, FICME (far left). Bill is currently Senior Lecturer at The University of Birmingham in the UK. Dr Bill Griffiths began his working life in a grey cast iron foundry, obtaining an HND in Cast Metals Technology and much practical experience. This was followed by a return to studies, eventually resulting in a PhD in Industrial Metallurgy (his thesis was entitled "The quenching characteristics of sodium polyacrylate solutions"). He was then employed at Foseco International Limited on the development of grain refiners and modifiers for Al alloys before becoming a Senior Research Associate at Nottingham University studying electromagnetic stirring of Al alloys. He then became the Federal-Mogul Senior Research Fellow at UMIST where he spent nearly five years studying interfacial heat transfer during casting solidification. He has presented numerous papers at international conferences and is frequently published in our own Foundry Trade Journal. Bill is also a longstanding member of the ICME Technical Board and was Vice-Chair of the Technical Committee for the recent World Foundry Congress held in the UK in 2006.
