Scottish Branch Technical Meeting

High quality bronze sculpturing

Brian Caster and Kerry Hammond from Powderhall
Bronze gave a presentation to the branch in March on the progress their company has made over the last 18 years since they started in business.

The company handles a number of commissions for corporate bodies such as Scottish Widows, Edinburgh Film Festival and Edinburgh Quay Ltd. Along with their vast client base they have public sector commissions to Glasgow City Council, University of Glasgow, Edinburgh Supreme Court and Scottish Arts Council to name but a few.

The original success of the foundry stems from a dedication to produce the highest quality bronze sculpture; achieved by combining traditional lost wax casting techniques with modern materials. Using silicone rubber moulds, specially blended casting waxes and the finest possible investment techniques, sculpture is nurtured through the casting process. At the critical stage of finishing and patination, interaction with the foundry brings the artist’s work to fruition.

The company also offers a comprehensive maintenance programme to care for outdoor sculpture and monumental artworks as the conservation of existing statues and monuments is vitally important. Using specialist knowledge and experience in traditional patination techniques, they can restore bronze castings to their original appearance.

The latest venture in the new foundry is a gallery where the public can come and view the work and also purchase items on display.
