Alok Sharma becomes full-time COP26 President and Kwasi Kwarteng is appointed as Secretary of State for Business

Kwasi Kwarteng is appointed as Secretary of State for Business, as Alok Sharma takes on the role of full time President of the COP26 conference.

Kwasi Kwarteng will take over leadership of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The previous postholder, Alok Sharma, will now focus full-time on his presidency of COP26, where world leaders will meet in Glasgow this November to discuss climate change.

Also reported in the reshuffle, Anne-Marie Trevelyan will now become Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, tasked with implementing Boris Johnson’s 10 Point Plan on climate change.

The industrial strategy for the UK continues to be vital as we look to transition to net zero carbon, whilst remaining competitive. The UK metals sector, as a foundation industry within the UK’s wider high value manufacturing supply chain, can play its role in the levelling up agenda and we look forward to working with the new team within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in the coming months.
