On the 11th & 12th October 2023, Progress Rail generously hosted a 2 day course “Introduction to Foundry Methods Engineering” for 9 delegates. The course was delivered by John Myers MICME, who shared his many years of knowledge and experience.

The “Introduction to Foundry Methods Engineering” training was aimed at improving knowledge of how to design running and feeding systems to produce sound castings using different casting processes and materials.

The course focused on the advantages and disadvantages of different casting process and how this might affect the process selection, the differences between pressurised and unpressurised running systems, and the reasons for selecting them, the different parts of any running system and an explanation of  how they impact on the pouring of a mould.  The application of knowledge to be able to calculate simple running systems based on case studies provided was included, as well as an introduction to the solidification of casting alloys and the different types of feeders that can be used.

What our delegates had to say

“Excellent couple of days and a very knowledgeable instructor”, Calum McMillan, Progress Rail.

“Higher level of knowledge with regards to methoding calculations and how to use them in the correct way,  and ideas to take back to my own company for discussion.”  Daniel Johnson, Peel Jones Copper Products Ltd.

“Instructor had a very detailed knowledge and techniques when delivering the course material, and I have gained a better understanding of the methoding process in relation to casting.” Michael Quigley, Progress Rail.

“I now have a more in-depth understanding of running and feeding systems”, said Kevin McGurk, Archibald Young.

Amy Worrallo MICME, Training & Quality Manager for ICME, reflects on the importance of supporting our industry around the country, saying, “In these particularly challenging times, it is important that we are able to help to support and future-proof our industry.  The positive feedback from this course has shown there is a continued need for professional development of individuals in our foundries, as well as for those involved in designing and using castings.  ICME is here to support with the training on a range of topics relevant to our industry”.
