Educated at Tipton Grammar School, in 1972 Paul joined Triplex Foundries Group as a Trainee Technician. He studied at both West Bromwich and Chesterfield Colleges where he gained a HND in Foundry Technology, before returning to Sandwell College to obtain endorsements for the MIBF grade of membership.

Paul worked in several roles in the Triplex Foundries Group until the merger with FH Lloyds to form Triplex Lloyd. During this time, he also studied for the Certificate and then the Diploma in Industrial management at Wolverhampton Polytechnic gaining Membership of the Institute of Management.

In 1985 he was responsible for the installation of the Triplex Alloys foundry at Darlaston and was appointed Technical Director in 1989, succeeding John Campbell who joined the University of Birmingham as Professor of Foundry and Cast Metals.

Following a short spell, at BCIRA he then joined Zeus Aluminium in the USA and in 1998 Sandwell Castings Ltd as Works Manager, a position he held for six years.

Affected by recession, the next few years saw a number of short-term contracts around the country until he was appointed Operations Manager at Charter Castings in 2006. Since then, he worked at a number of foundries in a consultancy role, including a spell in China in 2012.

Paul joined the then IBF (now ICME) in 1973 and was active in the West Midlands Branch, serving as Branch President in 1996 and gaining his IEng Registration in 1980. He was involved in many initiatives like the Young Foundryman Award, the School’s Prize and scholarship schemes and helped form the ICME Young Foundryman’s Society. He retained an interest in education and was a Trustee of the Tor Lodge Trust (now the Foundry Training Trust).

In 2000 he received a Long & Notable Services Award from the institute and in 2016 he was awarded the Oliver Stubbs Medal for the dissemination and sharing of technical knowledge in the industry and had received both Silver & Gold Pins for Long Service of ICME Membership.

A lifelong West Bromwich Albion supporter, he was also well known for writing humorous short stories – a collection of his short stories was published in 2015 entitled “the Bangkok Ladyboy Male Voice Choir and other stories”. He also sang with the Coseley Male Voice Choir for over 40 years and had a passion for music.

In later years, he was deeply involved in the renaissance of technical education in the industry and helped to deliver many courses, including the Diploma in Foundry Technology at Dudley College and around the UK, the Certificate in Casting and technical short courses, and was active in helping the establishing the new National Foundry Training Centre at the Elite Centre for Manufacturing Skills, ECMS.

Many people in the industry today will have been taught by Paul and benefited from his generous sharing of technical knowledge, whilst enjoying his humour and entertaining tales of a life in the industry.

He leaves his wife Karen and sons Matthew and Richard.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Paul’s family and friends during this difficult time.
