- Mark Lewis from Omega Sinto Foundry Machinery Ltd and the winning team from Furniss & White
- Trophy supplied by Wm Lee
- Wooden spoon winners ‘Common People’ from Wm Lee
With around 10 teams entering, and the room full of industry friends, the annual Peter Gleaves Memorial Quiz was a great success.
Expertly compiled and compered by branch President and National ICME JVP Simon Alexander (Wm Lee), the teams were challenged by a mix of general knowledge, popular culture and metallurgy, with a knowledge of geography and the periodic table being a clear advantage in the ‘States of Matter’ round. Adding to the jeopardy was the fact that the Joker was worth a possible maximum of 21 points so the decision about when to play it could (and did) make a significant difference to any team’s score.
Delighted with their wooden spoon, despite it being for the lowest score, were the team ‘Common People‘ from Wm Lee, but winners this year were the team from Furniss & White (Founders) Ltd with 111 points, beating the second and third placed teams on 110 and 108 points respectively.
The splendid trophy was supplied by Wm Lee, and, very appropriately, also in the liveries of both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United Football Clubs, were bottles of Henderson Relish (Hendo’s) for the winners.
Sustained by pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy, and the event kindly sponsored by Omega Sinto Foundry Machinery, a really enjoyable evening was had by all.
Thanks are due to Steve Illingworth and the Branch Council for organising the event, which is now a firm fixture in the annual ICME Calendar.
