Simon Alexander FICME was confirmed as the new President of the Institute of Cast Metals Engineers, ICME, at the recent AGM, taking over from Andrew Laing FICME who has completed his one-year term in office and now becomes the Immediate Past President of the Institute.

Simon is Managing Director at William Lee Ltd, an iron foundry near Sheffield and part of the Castings PLC Group. He has been an active member of the Institute and the ICME Northern Branch for a number of years and is a Fellow of ICME.

On accepting the chain of office, Simon said, “I am honoured to be taking on the role of President of the Institute, and I am really looking forward to my year in office. I am keen to build on the good work of ICME and help its evolution, so that it continues to move forward. As an Institute there is a need to attract new young and early career people into membership, and I hope I can help in that aim while I am President.”

Simon recently led a piece of work for ICME that engaged with prospective young members of the Institute to better understand how they view membership and what ICME could support and help them with in the early stages of their metal casting careers.

Simon also thanked outgoing President Andrew Laing for his work during his year in office representing the Institute.

Andrew said, “It has been a privilege to be President for the past twelve months and I would like to thank the rest of the Presdiential team and ICME staff for their support in that time. I have been fortunate enough to attend some great events and have the opportunity to represent ICME at them, highlighting the great work our members do and promoting the vibrant, historic and innovative industry we work in.”

The AGM also marked the move from Junior to Senior Vice President of Pam Murrell FICME, the first woman to hold a Presidential position. That landmark has been swiftly backed up with the election of another woman, Lynn Postle, to the Junior Vice President role. Lynn is editor of the Foundry Trade Journal.

ICME staff and members wish Simon, and the whole presidential team, a productive and enjoyable year.
