Inspire – Fate and Fortune: Reaching Your Highest Summit.
The Institute of Cast Metals Engineers is proud to celebrate the publication of a moving and inspirational memoir by one of our dedicated and respected past National Presidents, Roy Grundy MIBM MIM FID FIIB AIMC.
This powerful book, filled with heartfelt reflections and incredible achievements, offers readers a profound look at the life of a man who has given so much to our industry and community.
Roy has been a member of ICME for an outstanding 61 years, during which time he has contributed extensively to the profession. In recognition of his exceptional service, Roy has been awarded both the Silver and Gold Pins for Long Service—an honour that reflects not only his commitment to the Institute but also the positive impact he has had on the wider industry. Roy served as ICME National President from 2005 to 2006, but his contribution spans far beyond his presidential term.
Through this candid memoir, Roy recounts the highs of his career—from working at the forefront of global materials development, running his own successful consultancy, and holding leadership roles within major industry bodies, to becoming a trusted and respected voice within ICME and the wider engineering community. His passion for collaboration, his unwavering belief in opportunity, and his dedication to supporting the next generation of foundry professionals shine throughout every chapter.
But what sets this book apart is its emotional depth. Roy writes with honesty and courage about losing his beloved late wife to terminal cancer and later facing his own cancer diagnosis. In these deeply human moments, readers are reminded that leadership is not only about what we achieve in our careers but also how we rise in the face of profound personal loss. Yet, despite the challenges he faced, Roy’s story remains one of hope—finding love again with Christie, and together embracing each new chapter with resilience and optimism, continuing to inspire those around them.
Roy’s philosophy, which he shared with his late wife Poppy was :
“Lets give it a go and never say no.”
This simple yet powerful sentiment captures the essence of Roy’s life—a life filled with challenges and triumphs, heartbreak and new beginnings, setbacks and relentless determination. His unwavering message to young professionals and seasoned engineers alike is clear: never stop learning, never stop growing, and always keep your heart open to what lies ahead.
At ICME, we are honoured to have had Roy as part of our leadership, and we celebrate not just his remarkable career, but the personal strength and authenticity that now echoes from every page of his memoir. His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and the lasting legacy one individual can leave on an entire profession.
We encourage all members, colleagues, and friends to read this deeply personal and inspiring account from a man who has truly shaped—and been shaped by—our industry. If you wish to have a copy of this book please contact ICME Head Office at info@icme.org.uk or call on 0121 752 1810.
