ICME are pleased to award Dr Ian R Young OBE MA BCom D Eng FICME – a Silver Long Service Pin for an enduring dedication in membership spanning 30 years.

Ian’s great-grandfather, grandfather and father all worked in foundries in Kirkintilloch, so it seems that molten metal runs in the family.  In 1959 Ian’s father left his job as a foreman moulder in a steel foundry in the town to start up his own one-man business as Archibald Young (Brassfounders) Ltd.  Ian was present as a 14 year-old in October that year when he poured his first cast.  10 years later he left university with two degrees and went to work on the foundry floor where he learned the skills of moulding, dressing and metal-melting.

As a craft-based jobbing foundry, it was essential to train apprentices and for many years Ian was involved with Metcom Training, an employer-led training organisation based in Scotland but with training centres in NE England and the Midlands, eventually becoming non-executive Chairman.  During this time Ian continued to grow and develop Archibald Young Ltd., Founders and Engineers, as they now were, with 4 foundries in Scotland and the north of England still focussed on traditional skills and casting every metal except steel.

In 1991, Ian was invited to join the Board of the newly formed Engineering Training Authority, as one of 4 employers representing the foundry sector.  Ian served on Entra and its successors for 15 years advising on craft training, for which in 2006 Ian was awarded an OBE by the Queen.

Ian joined the then IBF Scottish Branch in 1996 and in 2001, was appointed a Fellow of the now ICME.  Ian served as Scottish Branch President in 2006.  This led to Ian serving on the National Committee of ICME and being elected President of the Institute in 2012.  In 2022 Ian was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering by Glasgow Caledonian University for his lifetime involvement in the foundry industry.

Ian would like to thank ICME for the Silver Pin marking 30 years of membership and looks forward to continuing his involvement in our industry and in ICME.
